Emergency Services
The Volunteer Fire Department has 30 members of whom 10 are trained as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and one trained first responder. Equipment includes a 1994 International 1,000 gallon per minute pumper and a new 3,000 gallon tanker. Rescue services equipment includes a 2000 Road Rescue Type III Ultra Medic ambulance and a Jaws of Life purchased in 2001. The volunteer fire department has participated in a Life Net helicopter class and additional EMT training classes. Brainard participates in a mutual aid agreement with both Butler and Saunders Counties. The city is equipped with a 911 emergency system.

Medical Services
The Butler County Health Care Center, located in David City, is a modern, 20-bed hospital with recently remodeled rooms. It is staffed by five doctors who also operate the Butler County Clinic and Witter Family Medicine. A full complement of medical specialists visit the clinic and hospital on a regular basis.
